3 Sessions | Learn how to make and play stoneware clay ocarinas with musician and potter Karen Keenan. In the first class session, hand-build ocarinas—a type of fipple flute. In the second session, learn about decorative application techniques by painting terra sigilatta and slip on your instrument. In the third session, learn how to play your finished ocarina, listen to examples of fipple flute music, and discover the relationship of these instruments from a variety of cultural perspectives and histories.

The Duluth Art Institute’s Lincoln Park Building (2229 W 2nd Street) houses a fully equipped ceramics studio accommodating beginning to advanced potters and ceramic artists. The studio provides throwing wheels, hand-building and wedging tables, a slab roller, spray booth, glaze room, and related hand tools. The studio also boasts four electric kilns and one large gas kiln.
